We beat Fordham on Wednesday night to win the La Hogue Midweek League Div 2 final. In an exciting and very close game Matt Sigsworth bowled the last over that secured the Chippenham victory. Earlier Chippenham posted 135 with skipper Paul Fishpool top scoring and taking part in a key partnership with Charly Rattley to give us a total that proved just our of reach of Fordham.
Bury won the toss and chose to field. Stephen Kelleher and Jack Rutter opened the Chippenham innings against some very tidy bowling but managed to take the score to 213 without loss after their four overs. Next at the crease were Harvey Watts and Tom Tallant who scored steadily to increase the score to 232 for 0 at the half-way stage. Debutant Ollie Selfe and Patrick Bartram in only his second appearance batted well together and improved the score to 243, still without losing a wicket. The final pair saw captain Shaun McGlone and James Boyle at the crease. Bury’s bowlers saw their first success of the night in the final four overs and claimed their first wickets. At the close of the Chippenham innings, the score had increased to a respectable 244 for 2.
Stephen opened the bowling for Chippenham and saw success with his very first delivery when Shaun held a very good catch. James then took the second wicket in the fourth over which left Bury on 216 for 2 after four overs. Harvey and Shaun bowled the next four overs and thanks to more fantastic catches from Shaun and Ollie (2) off Harvey’s bowling, kept Bury’s reply to 239 for 5 at the half-way stage. Jack and Patrick were the next bowlers used and although they didn’t take any further wickets, they did manage to contain the Bury score to 260 for 5 with four overs to go. Stephen and James were reintroduced to bowl the final four overs of the match and both bowled with good line and length. Stephen took his second wicket of the match and the Bury innings closed with the score at 274 for 6, meaning that Bury won the match by 30 runs.
A great team effort, particularly in the field, with a special mention to Shaun and Ollie who took two catches each, and to Harvey who top scored in the Chippenham innings and took three wickets for seventeen runs.
Chippenham won the toss and captain Shaun McGlone elected to field. Stephen Kelleher and Max Weaver bowled the first four overs and reduced Bardwell’s score to 194 for 3, Max with two of the three wickets. The next eight overs were shared by Shaun, Harvey Watts, Patrick McCaffrey, Jack Long, and Jack Rutter, by which time Bardwell had recovered a little to 212 for 6, Shaun and Patrick taking a wicket each and a run-out. Stephen and Max returned to bowl the final four overs against Bardwell’s strongest batting pair. The first two overs went for 20 runs without loss however the boys didn’t panic and took three more wickets for eleven runs in their final two overs. Bardwell closed on 228 for 9, with Stephen and Max taking three wickets each.
Stephen and Patrick opened the innings for Chippenham and found it hard-going against some very accurate bowling but managed to take the score to 205 for 1. Harvey and Tom Tallant were next in and managed to add ten runs in their four overs before Tom was bowled off the final ball, taking the score to 210 for 2 at the half way stage. The two Jacks batted next and although runs were hard to come by, steadily took the score to 217 for 3 after their four overs. Shaun and Max were last to bat and progressed the score nicely to surpass Bardwell’s total and make 229 for 4 with one over remaining. With wickets costing five runs each, the final over was extremely tense and the result could still go either way. Max played the last over with extreme maturity and didn’t give Bardwell’s bowler a chance of taking a vital wicket. Just two no-balls were added to our score which closed on 231 for 4 and a win by three runs for Chippenham. A superb all-round team performance and two wins out of three so far in our mini league. One final match, at home against Bury St Edmunds on Thursday the 19th of July.
